Wonder Girls Explain Sunmi's Withdrawal

The controversy generated by the withdrawal of Sunmi from the internationally renowned pop group Wonder Girls has not subsided.
On February 8, 2010, four members of the K-pop group met with fans to explain their side on the issue.

Sunye, Yoobin, Ye-eun, Sohee and representatives from the Wonder Girls' Korean fan clubs met at the JYP Entertainment headquarters in Cheongdam, Seoul.

Understandably, Sunmi as well as new member Hae Lim, were not present in the meeting.

One of the issues raised during the meeting was the Wonder Girls’ seemingly rushed entry into the US market. Many fans thought the group is not yet prepared to do so.

The Wonder Girls told the fans that carving a career in the US was a long-time dream of all the members and as such, everyone thought it imperative to strike while the iron is hot.

According to the group, they wanted the chance so much that Sohee and Sunmi even had to quit high school to focus on their US careers.

JYPE didn't shed light on why Sunmi decided to abruptly quit the group. Earlier reports had it that Sunmi was homesick and she missed her family a lot.

The girls also defended new member Lim from criticisms that she could not possibly fill Sunmi’s shoes in the group. They said Lim has a lot of potential.

Some fans said they respect Sunmi’s decision and would welcome Lim to the group. Others said the Wonder Girls would not be complete without Sunmi.

Lim had her first performance with the Wonder Girls in China last February 5.

Sunmi is staying in the US. She is set to fly home to South Korea in March to prepare for her studies.
